Lego 'Serious Play' promises a "radical, innovative, experiential process designed to enhance business performance." So it was with great excitement that Hot Source hosted Norwich's first Lego Serious Play session.
The idea is that people get hands on with a vast pile of Lego to explore various ideas and concepts, it is very much reliant on joining the group and getting stuck in with a firm belief that everyone can contribute to the discussion, the decisions and the outcome. Patrizia the ‘Lego-ologist’ facilitated the session and the first lesson was that the group was building concepts and not models. So in short spurts of activity, 2 or 3 minutes little models or every shape and size emerged and then she put us on the spot by getting us to build concepts around them. “This model is about marriage, tell me about it!” Excellent for thinking on one’s feet! The most interesting lesson for me was that when instructed to build a tower in two colours everyone set to with great purpose, of course everyone knows what a tower looks like. However all the towers were different and not just a bit different, but totally different. A great reminder not to assume that what you ‘see’ in your mind’s eye is the same as what your colleague or client ‘sees’ in their mind’s eye!
