The client

The Adapt Low Carbon Group at the University of East Anglia is a gateway to access the expertise and knowledge developed in the UEA’s research base that will underpin the progression of the UK economy towards a low-carbon sustainable future.

The project

We were asked to design a cost effective and low waste mailer for the AshTag kit.

The challenge

Ash dieback disease has been rapidly spreading across the country since October 2012. The race is now on to help scientists understand how the disease spreads and to identify potentially resistant trees. Adapt have designed a kit (5 aluminium tags, 10 nails and nail holder) and a method of geo-tagging Ash trees in order that their health can be monitored. We were asked to devise a way for it to be sent safely through the post. Instructions on how to use the kit also needed to be included. Adapt wanted to keep posting costs low and for the packaging to have little waste. The solution we found was to use one square sheet of paper which folds down to make a cost effective envelope with the illustrated instructions printed on the reverse.

The result

Adapt were delighted with the solution as it achieved the brief of minimising cost and waste but was also thought compelling. Click here to visit the AshTag site and watch a video explaining how it works.

The mailer that Special Design Studio designed for the AshTag kit is quite ingenious. It manages to contain everything in one neat package along with a great illustrated diagram on how to use the kit. We are very pleased as it enabled to keep our costs low and created little or no waste.
