Eye is for India is an online boutique and gallery launched in 2011 showcasing the work of modern day masters and emerging artists and designers from all over the Indian subcontinent. Including works by M F Husain, F N Souza, Manish Arora, Rohit Bal, Chintan Upadhyay and Nimita Rahod.
The concept behind Eye is for India is simple – selling and showcasing beautiful art and design from the subcontinent. Our job was to make that happen with a stunning visual identity and a website both exhibiting and selling the work.
With such beautiful artwork and clothing, it was important to show it off, yet we also had to balance that with the need to sell the products – it was, after all, an ecommerce site. We achieved this by only ever having one item on screen at a time, meaning we could use larger images and focus the user’s attention on the item being viewed. We also added links for viewing even larger images and did some cool stuff with fruit to give people an idea of scale. A potential problem of showing only one item at a time is the need for users to continually have to load new pages in order to browse, something most people find frustrating. We avoided this by loading multiple items, but hiding them in the background ready to slide across when replaced.
Within Indian art and design growing in status, Eye is for India is in a great position. We were really excited to work on this site at the time and it’s hard to believe it’s now over three years old – it still looks as great today as it did then.
