Design a cinema and promotional poster.
Wavelength Films made a documentary film with Stephen Fry about his relationship with the music of composer Richard Wagner. Fry has loved Wagner’s music since his youth, but Wagner’s anti-Semitism forces Fry to question if he can separate the man and his music from his beliefs and the subsequent association with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party. The film had aired on BBC television but the film makers were entering the film into competitions around Europe and the USA and had a cinema release across the UK. A promotional poster was needed for cinema lightboxes and general promotional use. The film makers wanted to emphasise a positive outcome through the poster – as Fry continues to love Wagner’s music regardless. The final design has the silhouette of Fry, arms outstretched, from a still within the film. He is positioned in front of an army not of fascists, but of musical notes.
The film won many awards at festivals and was subsequently taken up by a distributor in the United States of America where it enjoyed a cinema release. The poster received a positive response and it was resized to fit different cinema lightbox requirements across the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
“The style and content was bold, original and striking – just what we wanted. The poster went around the world with the film and was positively commented on everywhere.”
