As a professional diver, St. Giles’ founder, Simon Melton, has been fortunate to venture to lots of unusual places around the world, giving him ample opportunities to explore a wide variety of delicious gins. Returning home to Norfolk, the land of big skies and wide coastlines, gave Simon the perfect setting for quiet contemplation and dreaming of his next adventure; producing and perfecting a recipe for his own exceptional gin!
When Simon Melton, the founder of St Giles Distillery came to us to create a brand for his new gin we knew we had to create a visual brand that was distinctive in order to set his product apart in an exploding gin marketplace!
The name St. Giles gave us several elements to work with – the historical district St. Giles in Norwich, the history of St. Giles the saint and St. Giles in London, famed for its Gin Lane.
Eventually we created a beautiful colour palette derived from the church St. Giles in Norwich and its environs, a churchyard with a stunning Wisteria. This included one element that resonated with all involved – the copper lightening rod that runs down the side of the church – a stunning verdigris. It also tied in beautifully with the gorgeous copper still, named Anna, where the magic happens!
We also looked at Simon’s background as a diver, who has worked, commercially, all over the world. Simon has always sought out gin on his travels, it was always the pleasure at the end of the day – hence the supporting line ‘Reward for Adventure’.
We worked closely with label printers, Label Apeel, to get the artwork spot on and have ended up with a very distinctive and vibrant label. Kate crafted the copy for the website, another distillation of Simon’s years of work, travels and aspirations!
