Torn Sail is the band fronted by Huw Costin – whose solo work can be seen elsewhere on this website. This is what music writer Wyndham Wallace (Uncut) says about them. "TORN SAIL’s music is so utterly timeless that it could have been released any time since the mid 1960s. Calling upon the likes of Tim Buckley, The Moody Blues and David Crosby, more recent acts like Verve (before they became The Verve), Sun Kil Moon and Talk Talk, as well as enduring influences such as Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams and Pink Floyd, it wears its heart on its sleeve unashamedly..."
For this release we collaborated with photographer Joakim Borén. Joakim is a great architectural photographer and travels the world taking shots of amazing new buildings. The concept for the sleeve for This Short Sweet Life was to capture Huw’s home. The theme’s are about love and life and loss and all these things happen in or around the home. Home is where we live. We really wanted to make a document – a record of this unglamorous but noble home. We knew the sleeve would be gate-fold – so the cover features Huw scooting on his daughters pink scooter, with his partner, the artist Caroline Locke, looking through the window. Inside the gate-fold is the dinning area – where we ‘dressed’ the walls with a lifetime’s worth of photos and cuttings etc. Huw and Caroline’s children were added to make the full family compliment. And the back of the sleeve features… yes, the back of the house. I love making things that have the future in mind – a document. And this sleeve will hopefully become more interesting with age. Especially for Huw’s children.
