While known for its excellent food, Les Fontaines du Gerfaut restaurant has, up to now, been reliant on the close links with the Provence Country Club and nearby golf course. With much more to offer, and a need to appeal to a wider audience, the owners wanted Special Design Studio to help them with their web design and search engine strategy.
With the restaurant only having a page on the Provence County Club website, it quickly became apparent the lack of a web presence was hurting it: there was only limited space to show off the restaurant and Google wasn’t ranking it important for anyone looking for a restaurant in the area. The obvious thing, then, was the restaurant needed its own site, while the need to attract more visitors from search meant a carefully considered search engine strategy was necessary.
While a French business, the high number of tourists to the Provence region represented an important audience. We decided to build an additional English version of the site alongside the native French one. While that brought technical challenges of its own, the need to attract visitors from Google meant the search engine work also had to account for two languages.
With search so important, the entire web design was led by the search engine strategy. We made sure the structure of the site gave us the opportunity to target the key phrases we’d identified, and went from there. When choosing how to build in the multi-language functionality, we followed Google’s guidelines, with the French and English versions of the site on different urls, adding /en/ to distinguish the English version. We supported this with code pointing to the equivalent pages in the other language, both on the site and within the sitemap submitted to the search engines.
Even at this early stage, the restaurant is starting to come out of the shadow of the Country Club – Google searches for restaurants and venue hire in the area are already improving. The client is delighted with their new website and feedback from visitors has been very positive. We’re particularly proud of its responsive design and how the site adapts to different devices and screens beautifully.
